How Etsy seller fees work in Australia

Australian sellers pay Etsy's universal fees — the US$0.20 listing fee and 6.5% transaction fee on item price plus postage — with Etsy Payments processing at 3% + $0.25 for domestic orders (international orders process at a higher rate). GST on fees applies for sellers not registered for GST, which the calculator leaves to the "Misc fees" field.

Fill in your price, postage and costs to see your true profit per sale in AUD, your margin on revenue, and the item price you'd need just to break even.

The formulas behind the numbers

Nothing is hidden — these are the exact rules the calculator applies, in the order it applies them.

Listing fee
US$0.20 per listing, and again each time a sale auto-renews it — Etsy bills the US$0.20 listing fee in USD; shown as ≈A$0.31 — the exact charge follows the exchange rate on your payment account.
Transaction fee
6.5% of everything the buyer pays you: item price + shipping + gift wrap.
Payment processing
3% of the order total plus $0.25 fixed, charged by Etsy Payments on every order. Domestic-order rate. International orders are processed at 4% + A$0.25.
Offsite Ads fee
15% of the order total when a sale comes from an Offsite Ad (12% for shops over US$10,000/365 days), capped at US$100 (≈$155.00) per order.
Profit, margin & break-even
Profit is revenue minus every fee and cost above. Margin is profit as a share of revenue. Break-even is the lowest item price where profit reaches zero — solved against the full fee structure, including the Offsite Ads cap.

Frequently asked questions

How much does Etsy take per sale in Australia?

Etsy charges a US$0.20 listing fee, a 6.5% transaction fee on the item price plus shipping and gift wrap, and a payment processing fee of 3% + $0.25 per order. For a typical sale that works out to 10–13% of what the buyer pays — before any advertising. The calculator's "Etsy takes" stat shows your exact percentage for your numbers, using rates effective 2026-02-13.

What is the Etsy transaction fee charged on?

The 6.5% transaction fee applies to the entire amount the buyer pays you: item price, the shipping you charge, and any gift wrap charge. That's why charging $5.00 shipping doesn't net you $5.00 — Etsy takes its percentage of shipping too.

How does the $0.20 listing fee work?

You pay US$0.20 when you create or renew a listing (billed in USD and converted to your currency). After every sale the listing auto-renews for another US$0.20, so each sale carries at least one listing fee. Listings also expire after four months if unsold — if some of yours expire without selling, raise "Listing fees per sale" in the calculator to spread that cost across actual sales.

What are Etsy Offsite Ads and can I opt out?

Etsy advertises your listings on Google, Facebook, Instagram, Pinterest and Bing. You pay only when a buyer clicks such an ad and orders within 30 days: 15% of the order total if your shop made under US$10,000 in the past 365 days (you can opt out), or a mandatory 12% above that threshold. The fee is capped at US$100 (≈$155.00) per order.

Does the calculator include payment processing correctly?

Yes — Etsy Payments charges Australia shops 3% of the order total plus a fixed $0.25 per order. Domestic-order rate. International orders are processed at 4% + A$0.25.. Note that where marketplace sales tax is added at checkout, Etsy processes the tax-inclusive total, which can raise the processing fee by a few cents — the calculator uses your tax-exclusive amounts.

Is free shipping better for profit on Etsy?

Financially it's close to neutral: transaction and processing fees apply to item price and shipping alike, so moving $5.00 from "shipping" into "item price" changes your fees by almost nothing. Free shipping can still win you placement (Etsy boosts US listings with free shipping over $35.00) — test it by zeroing the shipping field and raising your price.

Does this include VAT/GST or income tax?

No. Results exclude sales tax, VAT and GST — both on your sale and on Etsy's fees (Etsy adds GST to its fees if you haven't provided a registered tax ID). Use "Misc fees" to add tax on fees or anything else specific to your shop, like Etsy Plus.

How accurate and up to date are these fees?

Fee data is maintained against Etsy's published Fees & Payments Policy, currently effective 2026-02-13, and refreshed whenever Etsy announces changes. Etsy bills some fees in USD, so small exchange-rate differences can appear on non-US payment accounts. Always confirm against your Etsy Payment account.
